Depression, alcoholism, and anxiety disorders are all possible consequences of quarantine and social isolation. While this is the most effective measure for the coronavirus pandemic, having social contact is essential for mental health. You can do it at least through calls and text. 

Joshua Morganshtein, a psychiatrist and disaster-related mental health specialist at the US Military Medical University says that for some people not to communicate is equal to not having food.

Most of the quarantine people experienced both short-term and long-term mental health problems like stress, insomnia, emotional exhaustion, and substance abuse. It was found by meta-analysis co-author Neil Greenberg, a psychiatrist at King’s College London.

Most people are, of course, not quarantined. However, even less severe forms of social isolation, such as maintaining a distance or staying at home, can lead to unpleasant consequences.

There are many problems in several weeks of social isolation, explains psychiatrist Damir Khuremovich. When people are fenced off from each other for months, the pandemic’s secondary effects begin to express themselves. There is an economic crisis, social unrest, unemployment. All this leads to widespread psychological problems in society.

“I sincerely hope it won’t come to that,” he notes.

 Older people are at significant risk for some lose the ability to move and communicate with age, and the circle of their loved ones shrinks as friends and family members die. According to the US National Academy of Sciences, a quarter of Americans aged 65 and older have few or rare social connections. And 43% of people over 60 feel lonely.

Psychologist Julianne Holt-Randstad states that there is a great social distance between us.

Some people survive a period of social isolation better than others. Co-isolation can strengthen families. Contacts with friends can be kept through phone calls, text messages, or joining online communities. According to Khuremovich, we live in an age of unprecedented communication opportunities.

And these opportunities should provide medical and psychological assistance remotely, he notes. Some research suggests that telemedicine services can alleviate loneliness. It can be beneficial for those living alone or far from health facilities.

Canadian gerontologist Verena Menelik doubts that remote medical support can replace personal contact. She doesn’t believe that in the long term, this is unlikely to be enough.

Besides, no matter how sophisticated modern technologies are, they do not allow hugging, holding hands, massage, etc. Such manifestations of sympathy have a positive effect on health. It can lower blood pressure and even make you feel better with colds. 

Neuroscientist James Coan especially worries about people who need medical care with COVID-19 and other diseases. In many hospitals, visits are prohibited. It helps avoid the virus, but it also reduces the amount of tactile contact, Koan explains. 

His research shows that hugging and other touching help people get through physical pain. The discomfort seems to them less intensive. Even the touch of a hospital employee in a protective suit is better than nothing, he explains. The scientist believes that such points should be taken into account in treatment protocols.
