What is Consciousness?

Consciousness is a concept that addresses both the internal and external stimuli of human awareness. In simpler terms, it is the awareness of inner or outer existence that helps us experience the world around us in our unique ways. However, it can also be expanded to spiritual recognition, medically altered states, psychological understanding, or more modern concepts of life purpose, satisfaction, and self-actualization.  

Even with centuries of analyses, explanations, definitions, and debates, the concept of consciousness remains mysterious and controversial. 

What exactly needs to be examined and explained about consciousness raises controversial debates. Sometimes it is referred to as ‘the mind,’ while at other times, it is considered just an aspect of the mind. In the past, someone’s consciousness was thought to be their inner world, which involves the world of private thought, introspection, volition, and imagination.

Modern research into the brain allowed us to group it as any experience, feeling, cognition, or perception.

The Levels of Our Consciousness

As a whole, consciousness is a term used to describe people’s awareness and understanding of what is happening in their surroundings. Consciousness comprises three levels: the conscious, subconscious, and the unconscious.

For millennia, Buddhism undoubtedly contained concepts of consciousness and subconsciousness within a sophisticated theory of mind. Sigmund Freud popularized this concept around the turn of the 20th century in the Western world.

  • The Conscious State

The first level of consciousness, and probably the most basic one, is the conscious state. It refers to the immediate awareness you are experiencing. We use our conscious mind when we receive input from our senses, analyze the information, and make decisions based on it. People are fully aware of their surroundings during the conscious state and can understand, talk, move, and respond like usual. 

The graphic below depicts a unique view of consciousness once proposed by Sigmund Freud. You can compare the mind to an iceberg that floats with only one-seventh of its body above the water.

Three Levels of a Human Mind

The conscious mind is determined by our awareness at any given time and includes all our current thoughts, both tangible or hidden. You may be consciously aware of the music you’re hearing, a conversation, any sensations or perceptions from the outside world, or even a sudden splurge of memories. If we’re aware of it, it can all be counted as part of our conscious experience.

Robert Collier, an American author of the early 20th century, once explained that you could only reach the subconscious part of your mind through your conscious one. Similarly, you can find all impressions done by the conscious mind through the subconscious, somewhat like a porter at the door or a watchman at a gate.

  • The Subconscious State

The next level of consciousness is the unconscious or preconscious state. It is the enigmatic stuff of which our dreams are tailored. It is essentially the storehouse of all our experiences in the form of any impressions or tendencies that we awaken or reinforce in our real lives.

Our experiences, thoughts, and impressions live in the subconscious mind, and they influence our thoughts and behavior patterns more than we typically realize. We can regard such experiences as impressions that remain in our minds and awaken or intensify our inclinations through our conscious mind. 

The subconscious holds information just below the surface of awareness and can be retrieved relatively easily by a person, usually in the form of memories. For instance, if someone asked you about your mother’s recent birthday, or the last time you baked cookies (if ever), or the name of your childhood crush, you will be able to recall the events in your memory. In the case of sub-consciousness, we might not be aware of past experiences’ memories but be entirely focused on the future. 

Our achievements in life, work, and relationships come from the habits we develop overtimes, including our mental and physical skills. Through practice and repetition, we can lock the desired patterns into our subconscious mind and become a permanent part of our behavior.

Sub-consciousness in everyday life can be seen when people seem to be awake and aware of the surroundings, but they don’t normally react, often appearing confused, strange, or sleepy to others. In case of diminished consciousness, people might not answer when spoken to, stare straight ahead, and have no facial expressions. Often, they may not recall what happened afterward.

This level of consciousness manifests itself in various ways, whether in mild ways like zoning out or through hallucinations or delusions.

  • The Power of Unconsciousness

The last level of consciousness is known as the unconscious mind and consists of thoughts, memories, and primitive instinctive desires. These impulses are rooted deep and far from our conscious awareness. Although we are not aware of its existence, it has a significant influence on our behavior.

Although our activities are more likely to be connected to the unconscious forces, we cannot access the information stored in our unconscious minds at any time. We accumulate many different memories and experiences throughout our childhoods. They shape the beliefs, fears, and insecurities we carry with us today. Although we cannot remember most of these memories, they are still critical unconscious forces that drive our behaviors. 

Often, we try to forget our most negative experiences or traumatic events, pushing such memories out of our subconscious mind. There could be some bad thoughts or life experiences that are considered too much for some to handle. Generally, they come from our subconscious parts of the mind.

Freud’s iceberg theory uses the image of an iceberg to isolate the three levels of consciousness. As an iceberg floats in the ocean, the vast mass remains fully submerged, with only a fraction of it visible on the surface. Likewise, we have parts of our individuality that we reveal to others, but most remain hidden in deep waters. You can discover it due to great mutual trust, friendship, and respect. 

In other words, unconsciousness occurs when a person is unaware of what is going on and cannot respond rationally to things that happen to and around them. There are three main kinds of unconsciousness, some of which you may already be familiar with. The first is fainting, which is a brief form of unconsciousness. 

The next is a coma, known as a deep, prolonged state of unconsciousness. The final one is known as general anesthesia, a controlled period of unconsciousness. 

Elevating Your Consciousness

Spiritual teachers state that we are only partially conscious thanks to our untrained minds and preoccupations with the basic desires and needs. Interestingly, most people are in a permanent sleep state, which means that we tend to stay blind to our true nature.

We see what we perceive as reality, but our reality is entirely different from other people. That is due to the unconscious lenses of our past experiences. In other words, there is a different reality and truth for every single individual today. In a nutshell, we create our realities in our universes on a deeper level. 

Imagine that you no longer consider yourself to be separated from the surrounding world. How different would it feel? What if you would see your face in the face of a stranger or an enemy? There’s a chance you would become patient, kind, and be more compassionate to yourselves and other living beings. 

We learn self-control and manage our thoughts and emotions to embrace the universe’s reality and other people, animals, birds, plants, and other creatures. Thus we will eventually reach a higher level of consciousness.

Raising your Consciousness in a Modern World

  • Meditation

Meditation is one of the most excellent spiritual practices of all time. There is a simple reason for people worldwide practicing it for thousands of years: it works. Take a break, find a location where you can feel calm, and close your eyes. While you’re meditating, divert unwanted energy away, control your breath, and pay attention to your thoughts. 

Meditation can take many directions, and they all depend on your personal goals. If you’re feeling lost, try reflecting on yourself, do a body scan. Focus on eliminating any negativity in your thoughts; think about improving yourself or your relationship with others. You could even divert your thoughts away completely and solely focus on your breath quality.

  • Behind the Scenes of Spirituality

One of the biggest mistakes of spiritual seekers happens when they try to divide their lives into spiritual and non-spiritual components. 

These people seem to act like one person at the ashram, church, mosque, Satsang, etc., and another with their friends or at work, almost as if they have a split personality. One personality is conscious, another is unconscious. One is awake, another is asleep. Don’t they realize who they are outside of the ashram, church, mosque, Satsang, etc.? It is just as important or even more important as who they are inside of it. 

Seriously, think about it, your life is not determined by what you do about 5% of the time, but rather what you do 95% of the time.

Instead, mindfulness is about removing that gap between your lifestyle’s spiritual and non-spiritual activities and turning them all into a spiritual practice. It’s about being fully present and conscious of whatever you’re doing. 

As Jon Kabat-Zinn, an American professor, writer, and scientist, once stated, “Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose in the present moment non-judgmentally.” He is well known for bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society.

Meditation and mindfulness go hand in hand. The more you meditate, the more effortless mindfulness becomes, and vice versa. That way, you can be fully alert and conscious about everything you do. Mindfulness is also meditation because it is a habit, and like all habits, it will become easier the more you practice.  

  • Critical Thinking and Enlightenment

When it comes to religion and spirituality, one of the biggest misunderstandings is that enlightened beings are expected to know everything, be infallible, and never act wrong. 

It’s important to realize that all beings, including enlightened humans, can also be wrong, mostly when they talk about topics they know nothing about. Just because someone is enlightened doesn’t mean he/she is infallible or is an expert on everything. 

Suppose you want to become smarter and raise your awareness. In that case, you need to think for yourself. Start to question everything you’re being told and everything you read, watch, and listen, rather than blindly believe whatever your guru, holy book, or religion says. 

Unfortunately, critical thinking is one of those skills that the majority lack. By improving your awareness, you’ll better understand the world around you and dismantle your prejudices and logical mistakes. 

Meditation eases the mind and allows you to see and perceive things more clearly. However, meditation and mindfulness do not suffice. Many so-called meditators do not possess the most basic critical thinking skills in their thirties.

  • Become a Truth Seeker

If you want to sharpen your consciousness, you must be a truth seeker, and you cannot pursue enlightenment while simultaneously being opposed to reality. Unfortunately, most people are not seekers and could care less about the truth. They are seekers of recognition, comfort, and pleasure, but they are not seekers of truth. Instead, these people want to feel good. If the fact makes them feel good, they go for it; if not, they don’t. 

If you want to seek the truth, you must be willing to follow the evidence wherever it leads you, even if it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or contradicts everything you believe. You must also be ready to change your beliefs every day without resistance or hesitation if the evidence requires it.

If you want the truth, no belief, guru, holy book, religion, subject teacher, or teaching should be off-limits or safe from criticism, questioning, or scrutiny. Again, do not just believe what you want to believe as most people do. 

  • Travel the World

Your travel around the world will open your eyes and mind, give you a real-life education, and teach you many lessons you cannot learn staying in your backyard. 

It will make you smarter, more experienced, and more knowledgeable, but it will also show you what this world is in reality. On top of it, you will be able to sense how our minds and the media present the world, and it will give you a reality quiz. 

  • Examine Your Life

Checking your life is one of the biggest productivity hacks I know. It is also one of the best and quickest ways to become aware of how you spend your time and life. If you have never examined your life before, an excellent way to start is writing everything you do from the time you wake up until you go to sleep at night. 

Yes, we mean tracking every 30 minutes of your day from Monday to Sunday. Doing so will allow you to make space in life for the things that matter consciously. You’ll immediately see a black and white picture of where you waste your time, how you go about your free time, and what you do on an average day or week. 

Even Socrates once said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” Even if you don’t feel like auditing your life, at least give it a try. By spending an hour on getting yourself organized, you can save thousands in return.  

Most people insist that they don’t have time, but it’s not true. By engaging with life to the fullest and becoming aware of how and where you spend your time, you can stop wasting time on unimportant things and on arbitrary distractions that may occur at any moment. Auditing your life will prove that you not only have the time, but you also have a lot of it.

As a side note, this concept can also be applied to your daily food intake. Write down everything you eat from the moment you wake up to the time you fall asleep. By tracking your diet, you can become conscious of what kinds of food you’re eating and the nutrients you are receiving. Furthermore, this will allow you to see what is lacking and decide what needs to be changed in your diet.


As you elevate your consciousness, you awaken the eternal and infinite nature of your being. Higher consciousness correlates to an ever-rising awareness of existence, spiritual essence, and the energetic heart of all things. 

The mind is difficult to control, so you need to take small, gradual steps to manage and overcome it. You can lift the consciousness level by the energetic vibration, heightened by the right thoughts, words, and actions. We do not see reality as is due to our tendency to focus on the wrong things. Instead, we can learn and improve our lives by mastering the ability to live spiritually.

As we have already mentioned above, meditation is an excellent method to become more aware of your inner state and needs. Before you decide to start, you should find yourself a safe location in your house or outdoors, and make sure you won’t be distracted by someone. It would be better to turn all of your devices off while meditating. Remember to control your breath and divert unwanted energy and thoughts away. 

Be willing to be honest with yourself and others, even if it’s uncomfortable for you or contradicts your beliefs. You will probably need to change your attitude to improve your mental and emotional well-being, self-awareness, and self-confidence. 

The one reason why you can’t find your inner harmony is probably being tense or overstressed. If you have an opportunity to travel around the world – you definitely should! Your journey will open your eyes and mind, give you a real-life education, and teach you many lessons you cannot learn in your backyard.
